About Me

I am a qualified speech-language therapist and audiologist, obtaining my degree from the University of Pretoria. I have a great passion for especially young children as well as the geriatric population.

Ili Rivera Walter said: “Success as a therapist is not in doing something for the client, but rather in being someone for the client.” This is what, I believe, has a big influence in making therapy more successful.

About My Practice

My practice was established in 2015 and I have been blessed with growth in my practice and opportunities to have crossed paths with awe-inspiring clients and their families.

I am located in Meyerton, Midvaal, which is a short 20 minute drive from Risiville and/or Vereeniging. I am registered with both the Health Professions Council of South Africa and the Board of Healthcare Funders of Southern Africa. All services are available in English and Afrikaans.

I am excited to work with each client who walks through my doors. I strive to treat every client with love, empathy and compassion. With the paediatric population, my aim is to help each child reach their full communicative potential by following a parent-centred approach to therapy.

For the paediatric population, I serve infants up to grade 12 learners; including the following areas:

  • Early Communication Intervention

Focusing on language, speech and early emergent literacy skill development from 0 – 5 years. It is never too early to bring a child for therapy. The earlier a problem area is addressed, the better the chances are for success.

  • Receptive Language

The ability to understand spoken language.

  • Expressive Language

The ability to use spoken language to express thoughts, needs and emotions.

  • Pragmatics

These skills refer to the non-verbal communication skills and social niceties used during interaction, like the ability to cope within a social context by using functional eye-contact, appropriate register, turn-taking and topic maintenance.

  • Auditory Processing

This refers to the neurological processes involved in transforming auditory stimuli for everyday functioning as well as for scholastic activities (important for reading and spelling).

  • Academic Language

Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency (or CALP) is vital for a child to be able to cope in the classroom environment and achieving academic success.

  • Reading and Writing Abilities

This refers to reading speed, fluency and comprehension as well as the understanding of written sounds and the understanding and application of spelling rules.

  • Articulation and Developmental Phonological Processes (DPD)

This refers to the production of speech sounds. Articulation difficulties and DPD can affect speech intelligibility as well as communicating effectively.

  • Voice Disorders/Difficulties

This refers to vocal misuse as well as difficulties with intonation and vocal quality.

  • Paediatric Swallowing Disorders/Dysphagia

This refers to excessive drooling, eating difficulties due to tongue weakness as well as dental problems due to incorrect tongue placement.

  • Multilingual/Bilingual Children

TThis refers to possible language confusion, as well as a lack of a firm language basis.

  • Stuttering, Stammering and Cluttering / Dysfluencies

This refers to any condition affecting the fluency of speech.

  • Aural (re)habilitation

This refers to the acquisition of speech and language after proper hearing aid fitting/cochlear implantation by an Audiologist.

With the adult and geriatric population, my aim is also to help each client to reach their full communicative potential by following a client-centred approach for adults and a team-approach to therapy for clients with neurological afflictions. For this population, I serve adults from 19 years onward to geriatrics; including the following areas:

  • Neurological Disorders due to Stroke or Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

This refers to any of the following (please see above for definitions/explanations):

    - Swallowing (Dysphagia)

    - Pragmatics

    - Cognitive Communicative Functioning
